Macy's Building, maybe?

KCRA did a story today about a proposal for the old Macy's building at Country Club Plaza. As you might expect, it's another developer-driven idea of what's best for the community, created within the County's vision-vacuum for our area. KCRA says the proposal includes self-storage on the 3rd floor (Huh? To compete with the 4-story self storage place at the Saving Center site? Really?) and "a new hotel and additional retail". OK, maybe if you have a load of stuff in the U-Haul, but you are too tired to unload it until the next day, it would be nice to have a hotel handy. We're not sure about the additional retail, though, given the mall's failure to do much about that for many moons now. And, dare we say, the proposal seems a bit underwhelming, though we give it credit for not including a drive-thru chicken sandwich place.

Screen grab from the KCRA report. We found some good things to say about the proposal: the architectural firm is local and the drawing is nice.

The report said Supervisor Desmond has "had discussions with the applicant and county staff about a larger vision for the former Country Club Plaza site that incorporates mixed-use housing, shopping, and gathering spaces." It also said he has not yet reviewed the proposal. Further, it said the applicant - a Seattle real estate investment firm - has not finished purchasing the property and is gathering support from the local community. So it sounds as though it's not a done deal, yet they want you to like it. What 's your opinion?
